When I went to school, we had many tests to find out what we knew and could do. A test is just one way to assess knowledge and skills. In a small class (like current grade 3) I have the luxury of having individual meetings with kids to assess them. It may take time, but I get a rather detailed picture of what they understand, how much, in what areas they feel confident and where they need more guidance or practice.
While I speak to individual students, others have worked on math posters for large numbers, rounding and comparing.
